October 3, 2008 – October 5, 2008The second Workshop on Mathematical Modelling in Biology and Medical Sciences will take place from 3rd to 5th October , 2008 here at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. The workshop is being organized by Professor Isaac Dontwi, KNUST, Kumasi and Professor Daniel Bentil from the University of Vermont, USA. With this Conference and 2nd Workshop on Epidemic Modelling, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) announce the new National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS). -
1st KNUST Workshop on Mathematical and Computational Methods in Biology and Medicine:Modeling Complex Systems
June 12, 2008 – July 3, 2008The aim of the workshop is to bring together graduate students, lecturers, professors and researchers who would like to develop and use mathematical and computational methods to solve problems in biology, ecology and medicine. The workshop intends to be an effective forum for the Centers for Mathematical Sciences and Quantitative Biosciences through which exchange of ideas and discussion of local and regional biological and biomedical research issues and future trends will be carried out. Part of the group’s activities will be to exploit innovative approaches in mathematical modeling and systems biology to uncover fundamental principles of complex biological systems. Group members will be expected to interact closely with experimentalists at our partner institutions (UG, KNUST, UCC and UMaT).
Especially crucial to this workshop is opportunity it provides for networking with local scientists to promote the development and application of mathematical and computational theory and methods in several allied science disciplines, including agriculture, biomedical sciences, public health, ecology, environmental sciences, and the life sciences, and the dissemination of some recent advances in mathematical modeling approaches in the above mentioned fields. We will emphasize research areas of emerging importance (pertaining to the African Region) and use quantitative biological data to develop dynamic and predictive mathematical models to unravel principles and fundamental properties of biological systems in research areas including (but not limited to) infection biology, cell biology, ecology, signaling and stress response in various model systems.
